Harz Mountains and Fairytale Germany – with the Carters

Our lovely regular customers Vivien and Eric Carter recently took a trip inspired by our Harz Mountains and Fairytale Germany holiday, but extended to three weeks, with additional stops in such places as Celle, Bremen and Hameln. This is what they had to say about the holiday (along with some pictures to illustrate).

If you like steam trains then head to the Harz Mountains in Germany. The “Harzer Schmalspurbahnen” runs both steam and diesel on three lines, mainly from the depot town of Wernigerode but also from Quedlinburg – both are picturesque towns with lots of half- timbered buildings.

Be sure to obtain a timetable and don’t miss the trip up the Brocken (the highest mountain) which is steam worked and also popular with hikers.

On the way to the Harz are the towns of Celle and Hameln – well worth a visit. Celle’s centre is full of half- timbered buildings (and “mannequins” which are very amusing) whilst Hameln has the fairy tale of the Pied Piper.

Both towns are very picturesque, this is the real Germany!
