Suggested Itinerary
Pick up the Eurostar this morning from London to Paris and make an easy connection onto the TGV service direct to Colmar from the Gare de l’Est. On arrival in Colmar, check in for an overnight stay at the Hotel le Marechal (or similar).
Enjoy an evening at leisure exploring the narrow winding streets and canals of Colmar’s Old Town area.
Leave Colmar after breakfast this morning and make your way back to the station for a regional service to Basel on the Swiss border. From here, continue to the national capital, Bern where you have a 2-night stay at the Sorell Hotel Ador (or similar).
Settle in and then head out to explore this stunning capital city. Bern is beautifully situated above a bend in the glacial Aare River. Along with a pretty Old Town with a Mediterranean feel, there’s also a wealth of museums to choose from, many of which will be covered by your Swiss Rail Passes (which will start tomorrow).
Enjoy a free day in Bern with plenty of time to explore. Not-to-be-missed attractions include the historic bear park and the lovely Rosengarten which has sweeping views over the city. You’ll have a Swiss pass as part of your package which covers all public transport so you can get around the city very easily – though it’s also easy to get around on foot.
We have suggested a morning or afternoon trip to the pretty town of Murten on the southeastern shore of a lake of the same name. The centre of town has covered arcades with lots of tempting boutiques and it’s completely free to walk around the medieval city walls and get great views over the town and lake. The town is a half-hour journey by rail from Bern.
Leave Bern today and make your way into the beautiful Bernese Oberland, with changes in Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen. Look out for stunning views over the Lauterbrunen Valley as you climb up to Wengen.
You have 4 nights here at the Hotel Falken (or similar).
You have three full days to enjoy the best of the Bernese Oberland with your Swiss Travel Passes, from your base in the alpine village of Wengen. We can pre-book tickets for the world-famous Jungfrau Mountain Railway for you, or you can arrange these yourself while you are in Wengen. Either way, you’ll get a 50% discount with your passes. Also well-worth a visit is the Schilthorn, featuring a series of cableways leading up to the top of one of the highest peaks in the region. You can also choose from numerous walking routes either from Wengen itself or by cableway. Your hotel will be happy to help with advice about these.
On one of your evenings, you might like to take the opportunity to visit a local diary farm and try some cheese in a traditional cheese cellar, accompanied by a traditional glass of schnapps! If you would like to add this unique experience to your booking, please let us know.
Bid farewell to the Bernese Oberland today as you leave Wengen and head back to Interlaken. Here, you’ll catch the Luzern-Interlaken Express, a panoramic service taking you through wonderful scenery to the lakeside city of Lucerne.
Here, you have a 2-night stay at the Waldstatterhof Swiss Quality Hotel (or similar).
Spend a day discovering lovely Lucerne, with its pretty Old Town, historic wooden bridges and lakefront promenade.
You can also choose from two different mountain experiences, both included with your Swiss Travel Pass. Either take a train to Vitznau and continue on Europe’s first mountain railway to the summit of Mount Rigi or head for Stans, where you catch an historic wooden funicular up to Kälti station and then an ultra-modern cablecar up to the Stanserhorn. This is another unique experience, where you can actually stand on top of the cable car as it ascends, giving you breathtaking views of the surrounding area. At the top, you can relax and take in the views, on foot or from a revolving restaurant.
After breakfast this morning, head back to the station and catch a train from Lucerne to Basel. Here, you’ll board a high-speed TGV service to Paris. Arrive mid-afternoon and make your way across to the Gare du Nord for your homeward Eurostar.
